PE COI Annual Conference 2017
The event, attended by more than 200 participants, provided an invaluable opportunity for SMEs in Singapore to learn more about the Precision Engineering (PE) Industry Transformation Map (ITM) as well as the strategies, plans, market opportunities, and modes of collaborations that will benefit and transform the PE industry. Local companies also learnt about SIMTech’s latest technologies and capabilities and how these can be applied to PE SMEs, with assistance from local funding agencies to realise business and industry transformation.
Mr Kelvin Zin, Head of Precision Engineering, EDB, shared on the PE ITM, the key challenges and opportunities in technology, talent and regional markets. He also showed how the Government is working to help local companies overcome these challenges and tap new opportunities. Industry leaders also presented on their collaborations with SIMTech to innovate and venture into new businesses.
An exhibition tour of the Capabilities Hub at MTA 2017 was also organised for conference participants to preview technology demonstrations by SIMTech researchers.
The fifth international conference on Optical and Photonic Engineering (icOPEN2017) was successfully held from 5 – 7 April 2017 at Singapore Expo. The conference was co-located with MTA2017, a leading exhibition in advanced manufacturing technologies in the region. The conference was attended by 120 delegates from 16 countries including students, academician and company researchers.
Optical Engineering which uses principles of optics and technologies from photonics to develop systems and instruments for industries ranging from 3D printing to Biomedical Optics to Multimedia to Precision Engineering. Optical Engineers or Optineers usually have multiple skills in areas such as optics, instrumentation, product design and instrumentation, mechatronics and computation. Since mechanical engineers are well suited and trained to multi-tasking, they are among the best candidates to advance into this area. Following the success of the Centre for Optical and Laser Engineering (COLE), the Nanyang Technological University has set up the Photonics Institute (TPI) which comprises 5 centres from different disciplines at NTU.
